Asma Peracha

Legal Fellow, Tax Policy

Asma joined Children’s Funding Project in June 2026 and serves as a Legal Fellow on the Action Team, focused on local tax policy. Her work includes assessing the taxing authorities of localities, supporting Sourcing Additional Funding (SAF) work, and serving as a legal resource for CFP’s cohorts and partners. Previously, Asma spent over five years as a human rights lawyer, most recently as Program Manager at the Rule of Law Collaborative at the University of South Carolina, where she managed international human rights projects on civil society capacity building, governance, and access to justice. She began her legal career as a National Security Fellow at the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation, litigating and advocating on government surveillance and watchlisting issues, and has also held research and internship affiliations with the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Al Haq, and the International Refugee Assistance Project.

Asma holds a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law, where she was a Student Advocate in the Global Justice Clinic and a Staff Editor for the NYU Review of Law & Social Change. She received her Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

She is based in Michigan, and when she’s not working, Asma is usually cooking, traveling, or spending time with family and friends – or often all three at once, usually with a color-coded itinerary.
